ive been trying to post my experience-first video player on reddit and i can’t even post anywhere because everywhere requires i comment NINE TIMES FOR EVERY PERSONAL POST. fuck that man I’m trying to share something i made for free over 3 months I’m not fucking playing social media simp just for the privilege
Even if it did let you post you would get shadow banned btw. So yeah Reddit is dead basically. Which honestly good riddance.
I only access Reddit (and Lemmy) through RSS so when they nuke that in two weeks, I’ll be gone, too.
My RSS feed already stopped sending me Reddit posts. Last ones were about 17 days ago. Ridiculous.
Reddit is a haven for spam, rife with bots and scammers, and it often hands over control to fraudsters.
This will of course fix none of those issues.
Even though they require login to view nsfw subs, I found nsfw multireddits work without login, and they default to the old.reddit layout. Please keep this as a secret haha
Or get off Reddit and join FediNSFW.
There is already a lot of fedisNSFW content on my All -feed here in lemmy, but the specific content that I like is only in reddit
That’s fair and understandable. I’ve got a few niche ones myself. Maybe think about pulling some of your fave vids and posting in FediNSFW anyway? Might find others who are into it as well and it’ll grow!
I think they are getting off.

It’s crapitalism.
I’m still waiting, reddit, why are you still accessible publicly? Second thoughts, spez? Seems this is taking longer than other announcements, like when they locked old.reddit behind a login. I saw the login prompt pop up on desktop once, and never again after that.
Reddit has repeatedly proved that they do not care about their users, regardless of what they say. No one who has left is eager to get back, they are only trying to catch new users which other social networks are much more effective at.
It also allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data
That’s the real problem, people have to stop giving Reddit their data to monetize before they inevitable kick them to the curve and remove any control they had over their own data.
The trick is that when you get booted, do NOT close out your account. Start manually deleting and when you get to the years prior posts and can’t go any further because you’ve hit the archived content wall… leave the site for a few months or so, keeping your login active.
Just wait.
It’s like facebook, in that when you show up after a time it will dig up your most current post to put up on your profile page… the system is designed to show you your own shit to keep you engaged, so it will unarchive your older content to bring it up. I’m now three years deep into my posting history on old.reddit and I delete a few pages worth every week. When I get to the end of this current batch and can’t go any further back… I’ll just wait. I don’t even logout.
Patience is the key esp. if you’d been on the site for a super long time (I had 15 years…)
Rinse and repeat until it is all gone.
Only reason I was still there was for my local state and city subreddits. Both of them have a discord now and both also have talks of moving to matrix if discord moves to age verification so I have 0 reason to stuck around.
reddit is moving to “a bot-only experiment”
ahh so a FACEBOOK clone
Ok
There’s only one social media site that’s still the same as it was a decade ago. The only problem is that it was never good.

It’s not the same place it was 20 years ago 😂 I hate how old I fucking feel knowing I was an og /b/tard
How has it changed? I’m genuinely not familiar with it. I know of the spicy reputation it once had, but I rarely see it mentioned anymore these days. I assume censorship or something like it found its way there?
User posts are down, bot posts are up. Go to anything political or US, Israel or Iran news and all you will see are hundreds of homo erotic AI images of Trump posted by bots
the bots switch themes every day, one day it was all about posting BBC, the other gore and so it goes
Ugh, that does sound terrible. I liked Reddit reasonably well before 2016 turned everything and anything into politics. And then covid and the whole Ukraine situation turned everything to shit even further.
I really miss the 2000 internet when it was just nerd discussions and the occasional funny gif.
Just because the people have changed doesn’t mean the platform has changed
“During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week. If this rate of decline continues, current trends would suggest that total DAUqs [or daily active unique users] could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs,” Huffman wrote.
Weird that not allowing people to use your site would lower the number of people using your site.
“People aren’t coming to our website so we are going to make it harder for people to come to our website.” - The dumbest motherfucker alive (and he’s competing with Trump and Altman)
“by forcing people to come to our site by logging in, but making it hard for people to maintain thier prescence here.”
also trying to not saying the drop is actually openAI not referencing the site as much anymore because banning people that were producing content isnt as good anymore. plus only going after the lowest hanging fruit of bots/spammers.
It’s just shitty that so much useful information is on reddit.
The people that created that info can recreate it elsewhere
It’s ok. The AI companies will scrape it and spit it out for you.
It’s ok. The AI companies will scrape it and might spit it out for you.
Correction bolded, but it was sad that was my first thought too
He’s so unbearably dumb…
And permanently banning anyone that says anything remotely like what the advertisers don’t like.
and those shadowbans has mostly forced people to just lurk. the serial ban evaders just adapt and make hordes of accounts as normal, although im hearing they are having a difficult time doing so.
And today in other news, more news at 8!
And I’m moving to an always logged out experience.
reddits trying to re-force a logged in one again. ironically they wanted people to read-only. but that just made people produce less content for google and open ai to scrape.
Not affecting my usage at all.
I’ll continue not to use it.
It has affected mine. Sometimes a Google result suggested the only answer was in a reddit thread, and I would click to at least see. Now I get a 'log in" prompt and decide I didn’t need that information after all.
Fuck /u/spez
Fuck /u/spez
Fuck /u/spez
I legitimately almost as excited for the spez downfall arc as I am for Trump’s.
They are rich, what downfall do you mean?
Rich ain’t gonna mean shit when people can’t afford food.
Greedy little fuckboy
*pigboy
I know what I said.
… I said the wrong thing, mistakenly, but I’ll stick with it because the error is closer to the truth…
Fuck /u/spez
When I stopped using reddit a few years ago, I left my account intact because I had 18 years of posts that included a lot of tech help and other useful information that I figured people might stumble across.
Last night, I used Redact to scramble all 5,521 comments.
They will automatically unredact your stuff unless you prove you live in a gdpr country with a government ID. Which they cannot be trusted with. Heads they win, tails you lose.
I’d imagine that that probably increases the magnitude of the effect I mentioned in another news article that I linked to here in another comment, where Google users are just using Google’s Gemini LLM rather than searching for information on Reddit. Google will already have incorporated that information into its training corpus for Gemini back when it paid Reddit for access to it, so it makes the LLM the only route for a user to get access to that knowledge.
(Not criticizing your move, just commenting on what I imagine the broader impact will be, particularly if the “logged-in only” move increases the rate of other people wiping their posts and comments as well.)
Since it’s scrambled and not deleted, hopefully future model updates will replace the original data.
But yes,it’s all a bit futile.
I went a different route. Let them choke on old information. It’s going obsolete anyway, let’s live on somewhere else.
My guess—and I’m not privy to any inside information here—is that operations at places that are building neural-net-based models look something like this:
-
“Harvest” people are responsible for obtaining data and as much associated information as possible, stuff like where data was obtained from, timestamps, any identity information, etc (handle “X” on platform “Y”). If a comment or webpage or whatever gets revised, maybe they keep multiple copies. They’ll avoid things like following infinite loops on websites, deal with corrupt archives, all that. That probably goes into some giant database. Maybe some of these guys buy access, like Google did with Reddit. A lot are just going to write spiders, scraping bots, whatever. A search engine fundamentally has to have a spider slurp down data to create its index to work at all, so I’m sure that Google is going to have a bunch of expertise in this area, built up over many years. They’ll probably retain this data in pretty raw, unprocessed form.
-
“Unification” people are going to work on the above. They write code to convert the above into a standardized-across-all-platforms format. Maybe they convert stuff to unify timezones or time formats on comments. Maybe they strip off formatting stuff added by particular platforms. Markdown or HTML titles, or titles in Microsoft Word documents, for example, probably wind up represented in one way. Where possible, maybe usernames get attached, if data is from a forum.
-
“Scoring” people work on the unified dataset. They are going to be developing some system—and there might be a number of parallel projects—for generating a score of various sorts that might be a useful value for either a model or training information. With this as well, search engines have to do this; Google’s PageRank, for example, tries to assess the “value” of a page, determine what’s most-useful and reliable information, so that it can order results (and maybe blacklist some). A lot of what search engines do isn’t just getting you hits, but putting the most-valuable ones at the top. If you can develop heuristics to rank information based on reliability or political position or any number of other things, those are going to be useful numbers.
-
“Pruning” people use information, probably including the “scoring” information, to winnow down the size of the data, eliminate data where the cost of inclusion in the training set—it’s costly to train a neural net, and reducing the size of the training corpus reduces that cost—outweighs the benefits. They probably try to cut out garbage, irrelevant binary data, poisoned data, duplicate data, misinformation, whatever.
-
“Training” people are going to do the training and probably develop systems for rating the value of the above “scores” in producing desirable output. Maybe some “scoring” heuristic is really super-useful in producing accurate and useful output as defined by some benchmark that these guys set up. Like maybe, oh, one “score” is based on whether information was obtained from a .gov TLD, or another whether a text classifier says that the language is English and the Lix school year readability is above a certain level. Could be many of these. Some of what these guys find may go back to the “scoring” guys in trying to guess what heuristics should be further developed (“known time of domain age to time content was initially spidered is particularly valuable in identifying SEO-generated spam website content; see if you can produce more scores that identify mass-created spam websites”), some to the “pruning” guys to increase the low-value data that they prune out, and some of what they find may go into weighting importance of text for the training process. Some may even go all the way back to the “harvest” guys to determine how frequently to spider data from a given source—Google doesn’t respider information at a fixed rate, but hits “valuable” sources, like major news sites, very frequently. For non-pure-LLM neural nets—I don’t know if Google is doing this yet with Gemini, but I’d imagine that eventually, probably more-advanced AIs will need to move past just being an LLM—this might also be an input used in making a decision at runtime.
There are probably going to be a lot of points in this process where not-valuable data gets identified and removed or deprioritized. Even if no engineer at somewhere like Google has tried to write a “scoring” heuristic to identify text specifically to identify output from a tool that mass-edits comments on Reddit, my guess is that text consisting of nonsense words, which is what some of the Reddit mass-comment-editing-tools I’ve seen insert, probably intrinsically get identified as part of that process by multiple classification tools that generate heuristic scores. If all of a user’s comments look like the output of some simple text generation tool, or if all of them change in a given short period, that’s probably kind of a big red flag. That does mean that the information won’t be in the output model, but I think that people who are aiming to poison LLMs during training probably are expecting more impact from putting nonsense in their comment versus just blanking the comments than they’ll likely have. Google—and more broadly, people who are running search engines and even more, building neural nets trained on data on the Internet—are just going to have to already have a lot of fairly-sophisticated work in place to assess the value of and filter their inputs.
Well next time I’ll use a time machine and go back to 2007 to tell myself to stay on digg lol.
I guess the next step is to use a tool that poisons the old comments with incorrect information.

Yah at this point its all already in their models sadly, at least anything that was posted historically.
Scrambling is easy detect. But if you edit the posts slightly to be wrong and useless, that is much harder to restore if you do it slowly (if you do it in batch they can easily see that all edits happened close to eachother. If it looks natural then they would need to start being paranoid about all edits).
I’m not sure how good something like this would be to do in big picture, but as its evident they are going to gatekeep ALL information at somepoint, they should be denied to it.
There should be a volunteer group you could give your reddit account to that would do as much damage to spezs shitty site as possible with it.
This is the dumbest shit. I’m doing home reno stuff constantly and we live in a world where everyone looks up info online constantly. Sometimes I need to reference an old reddit thread or whatever. It’s usually better than whatever garbage Google AI spits out at you by default.
Sure just guide people to doing stuff wrong. I’m so glad a few decades ago we invented this amazing source of knowledge and information and communication that is easily accessible for the first time in human history and yeah let’s just purposefully fuck it up.
Seriously, it is a huge pain in the ass exploring a niche subject and you get some scrambled comment because “reddit bad”.
I mean any solution that edits a comment every 4 seconds for 13 hours straight is bound to raise a red flag.
I figure it’s better than nothing. Besides, I still have control of my account and can run it again if they try bringing comments back.
Make sure to keep the account and check in after a few days, then weeks, then months and delete again if needed. When i left reddit i had found them restore about a third of my content about a month later, sneaky fucks. But since my last check, all remain wiped.
There should be a volunteer group you could give your reddit account to that would do as much damage to spezs shitty site as possible with it.
Redact is owned by a real piece of shit that holds onto that information for potential blackmail. FYI.
Velma, I believe you, but are there other sites you can recommend? Also, I couldn’t find any news on this.
Here’s an older Lemmy thread about Redact
Here’s a more in depth look at who Dan Saltman is:
Dan Saltman is a tech entrepreneur and political podcaster who leverages his platform to advance Zionist interests, targeting pro-Palestine voices and justifying Israel’s ongoing settler-colonial project in occupied Palestine.
As founder of TinyChat — a video chat platform acquired in 2014 after receiving $1.5 million in funding from Sean “Diddy” Combs, amid allegations of its use in predatory behavior — Saltman built his career in online communications. He now serves as CEO of Redact.dev, a service that deletes users’ digital footprints, which he promotes amid his own involvement in online activism. Saltman co-hosts the “Anything Else” podcast with Steven Bonnell II (Destiny), where he discusses politics and amplifies pro-Israel views to Western audiences.
Saltman has repeatedly portrayed pro-Palestine advocacy as support for terrorism, directly accusing streamer Hasan Piker of promoting “terrorist propaganda” and “Hamas recruitment videos.” In September 2025, he endorsed calls to ban Piker from Twitch, claiming Piker’s content encourages violence and supports terrorist organizations, while framing criticism of Israel as antisemitism. This rhetoric dehumanizes Palestinians by equating their resistance to Israel’s occupation with inherent threats, perpetuating consent for settler violence.
Saltman orchestrated a widespread disinformation campaign against Twitch, accusing the platform of fostering antisemitism by allowing pro-Palestine speech. He mobilized supporters to pressure advertisers, leading to temporary pauses in spending by companies like JPMorgan and AT&T in late 2024. This effort aimed to suppress voices critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza, where the confirmed death toll exceeds 40,000 — a conservative estimate, as Israel’s destruction of infrastructure and targeting of journalists has halted accurate counting, with the actual number slaughtered well into the hundreds of thousands. Saltman’s actions align with broader Zionist efforts to weaponize antisemitism accusations against dissent, shielding Israel from scrutiny over its apartheid policies and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and Gaza.
His associations extend to content creators like Ethan and Hila Klein of the H3 Podcast and Destiny’s community, with whom he has collaborated on attacks against Piker, viewing him as a threat due to his effective advocacy for Palestinian liberation. Saltman’s push to repeal Section 230 appears motivated by a desire to further censor online criticism of Israel. Twitch banned him indefinitely in November 2024 for “extreme harassment,” including doxxing and targeting employees who refused to comply with his demands.
This pattern of behavior is not isolated but part of a consistent effort to normalize Israel’s settler-colonialism, obscure Palestinian suffering under occupation and genocide, and manufacture public consent for ongoing violence.
Some additional info on the type of harassment campaigns that Dan Saltman engages in.
Dan Saltman? Is Sam even trying here?
Yea that guy sucks for a ton of reasons but what does that have to do with your claim that he holds on to your redacted Reddit comments as blackmail?
You think a guy who has stalked and harassed multiple people isn’t using everything in his power to force them to do what he wants?
There’s an ulterior motive for everything with Dan Saltman.
I sure as fuck wouldn’t trust any of my information with this fucker.
App claims it’s stored locally, so I don’t know.
Any source on the blackmail claim?
Ereddicate is the FOSS option, but reddit broke it permanently a year ago.
Jeeez, I was thinking about using them to scramble my Meta accounts, thanks for the info!
No problem! It can be hard to keep track of everyone behind the scenes, so to speak.
Whelp, glad I didn’t give him any money then.
I did 😭
I envy you. I was a little too outspoken which led to my account being banned, and now I can’t do anything about my existing trove of data I foolishly created for them
Don’t feel too bad, they kept a copy regardless of who redacted
Sorting by top of all time in any subreddit shows the scars from all this nonsense. I used to have a top post in the WarThunder subreddit, now it’s just a burning memory.
I made the discussion threads for a few shows in their early seasons from around 2010. There wasn’t automation to do it back then.
I’ve soon been on here for 3 years now and made almost 11,700 comments in that time (which I personally find must be a miscount somehow, that sounds insane). So anyway, I was on Reddit for over 11 years. Extrapolating these numbers kind of boggles my mind a bit.
It was pretty well theorized that by killing off apis they were cutting out their highest content providers, us. We provided free content and they got value out of it. Then they didn’t want us anymore.
Now we are here, thousands of comments and posts, and they are upping theirs with AI slop
Correct. I got banned for repping guillotines as a solution to Americas problems, and then doubling down. That “this account has been banned” banner has been a point of pride for me. I joined reddit in 2009. For so many years I answered questions and commented all day long. In certain subs I was a major contributor. I switched phones and now can’t even log in without an app. I will not be downloading that app. Goodbye Felicia good luck with your bots
Good luck to 'em. But also fuck 'em.
Evidently spez restores deleted comments from backup
That’s why I didn’t delete them.
Unfortunately, they absolutely can see edits and restore them if they wanted to anyway.
Smarter than I. I scrambled them first, then deleted. Used the blackmail guy too. I did it all wrong. Now all my accounts are banned and I can’t do shit about it.
