It’s not so much that they didn’t know it was illegal but that with a stacked supreme court it wasn’t clear (and maybe still isn’t? Not sure whether Trump can appeal this decision) whether it being obviously unconstitutional would matter.

I wouldn’t want to rely upon the legal services of a law firm that I’d just extorted. Seems…risky.
It will be hard for them to get clients once they been touched by maga, the reputation alone will make them lose clients
