What? They DIDN’T TEST Cyperpunk on all platforms at the release? Were they “Oh, look, it has compiled. Deploy then…”?
Not exactly at release, but until close to release. They did the entire thing for PC and then ported to the consoles at last minute, and by the time they realised the scale of the issues, especially on previous-gen consoles, it was too late to change the release date.
There were probably plenty of people working there that knew there would be issues on consoles…
Was just lucky it got removed from the stores as a result, thus effectively to delaying the console releases without needing approval from executives… 😅
That’s just the sort of thing that happens when there’s financial pressure and a need to meet holiday market timing…
I guess the silver lining is that the game would probably be worse had they limited themselves to last gen consoles.
They probably pre-sold it before even running it.
Honestly, making sure it works well on low-ish machines also makes it work better on high end.
It might make it run better, at the cost of scaling back and cutting things.
At least they included the game files
Before release they knew how bad the version on PS4 and XBOX One were, and they instructed the outlets they gave the test version to only show footage from CD Projekt Red. So they were not allowed to show all the issues, and that contributed to the illusion of game being playable. Sony did even a refund for the game, even if the original policy wouldn’t allow that (Edit: And forgot to mention that the game was even removed from the Playstation stores until game got fixed). It was one of the biggest AAA disasters in gaming history!
I pre-ordered exactly two games in my entire life because I bought into the nonsensical hype. These two games were No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077. Ever since then, I only have bought games at half price because that’s the point when the full price beta testers are done with quality assurance. I will do the exact same thing here. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
I’ve bought two games on release. Final fantasy 15 and cyberpunk 2077. I love what those games have become, but my experience has been similar to yours
My trick with preordering is that I always do it within the refund window, and only if the game offers preloading, and only for games I am super excited for.
That way I can get the benefits of preordering and still get my money back if the game is shit.
I built a new PC specifically to play Cyberpunk 2077, and somehow, I avoided any game breaking bugs or crashes. I’m not sure if it was my specific play style, a lucky route I bumbled into, or what it was… But watching all of the videos of people getting crazy glitches I’d never seen was endlessly entertaining.
Cyberpunk 2077… Never before have I been so glad I couldn’t afford a game when it was first released. I bought it recently at a steam summer sale, and it has become one of my favorite games ever. Missing out on the initial release probably saved me dozens upon dozens of hours of hair-pulling frustration.
It wasn’t that bad, people like to exaggerate.
YMMV, but PS4 on launch date was VERY rough. A pal called just to show how bad it was. We spent the evening just laughing at the million ways it was broken.
It was glorious.
Yeah, this was a rare day 1 buy for me on PC. Had zero issues other than a couple gameplay bugs that every game in existence at launch has. I never understood the uproar.
Console launch on the other hand I heard was rougher.
It wasn’t too bad for me on a Xbox One X, but I think PlayStation had it worse. I just laughed at the bugs and kept going.
It was pretty catastrophic for some people, I had a good PC for it and my experience was middle of the road. Couldn’t get much past the heist before it became unplayable, cars falling from the sky, dying from stepping off a pavement and just losing the ability to turn the camera were all fairly frequent issues. Its a pretty fantastic game nowadays though you can still see the contrast between the care given to the prologue missions and the rest of the game.
Seriously, I was a day one buyer and played it on a rebuilt $30 ps4 slim. No t poses or major glitches, I had one npc glitch that made a small side quest locked. But it really was a pretty enjoyable experience.
For some reason the text messages got desynched on my first playthrough (at launch), and by the time I figured out both what had happened and how to fix it (it was the quest where you tell the cop to back off an investigation?), i needed to start over to fix it.
Yup! That’s the same side quest. I went to her apartment and she got stuck drawing down on me and just kept walking slowly with her gun drawn.
I loved the jank. It hit the sweet spot of being hilarious and didn’t break my game. There were a lot of fun things to do/ways to break stuff.
I honestly prefer playing builds from the first six months or so, compared to the current build.
Back then the biggest issue wasn’t even the PC version, but the consoles, especially on the old PS4 and XBOX One. Just on top of all the bugs and problems the game had in all versions anyway. Game got ton of bug fixes and updates. And at some point long after release there was even a Version 2.0 update that overhauled even gameplay and added skill tree and other stuff. So you played the game in its best possible state, and its a solid game.
