German lawmakers have endorsed a new path to citizenship, allowing more people to gain dual nationality. A representative of Germany’s Turkish community warns that officials might struggle to process all the applicants.

The Turkish community in Germany said some 50,000 people with Turkish roots were expected to make naturalization applications in the coming years following the country’s citizenship law reform.

“And I assume that, in the long term, all 1.5 million citizens of Turkish origin in Germany who do not yet have German citizenship will acquire dual citizenship,” the head of the Turkish Community in Germany organization, Gökay Sofuoglu, told the media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.

On Friday, Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, approved a law that shortens the path to citizenship and makes it easier to hold multiple nationalities.

True, though I somewhat doubt the wisdom of expanding the already controversial dual citizenship at this time, when immigration is a currently hot topic that is largely responsible for their gains.

Either way, this is an absolute farce. Dual citizenship is the most ridiculously undemocratic practice that somehow flies under the radar.

The biggest issue is getting to vote in two societies, we see very well with Russian and Turkish immigrants what the result of that is: Reactionaries who live in a liberal society voting for authoritarians in their countries of origin; or otherwise furthering their agenda because they get to completely avoid any consequences of their policies.

Just to clarify: I’m against dual citizenships, not immigration.

From a country who strips one’s citizenship if one gets another (Japan) and following the court cases to allow dual citizenship I say the motivation for dual citizenship is not because so that they can work for their origin country. Duties and rights of citizen work in both ways.

From what I can tell the main motivation for citizenship is a) directly related restriction in job market ( eg. operating license for the field) or b) to legalize and secure their right to stay with their family members. Immigrants have financially attached to the country of living and their decision is often practical, and their vote is dependent on whether the policy is beneficial to them, like people with single citizenship.

It needs proper background check for sure, but the argument of foreign interference is fear mongering and often xenophobic imo.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

“And I assume that, in the long term, all 1.5 million citizens of Turkish origin in Germany who do not yet have German citizenship will acquire dual citizenship,” the head of the Turkish Community in Germany organization, Gökay Sofuoglu, told the media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.

On Friday, Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, approved a law that shortens the path to citizenship and makes it easier to hold multiple nationalities.

The first wave of Turkish migration to Germany took place in the 1960s when German companies recruited workers from foreign countries to help with its post-war reconstruction.

and a 2022 survey found there is nearly the same number of German citizens with “migrant background,” meaning they have been naturalized, or have at least one immigrant parent.

But this record seems destined to be broken soon, as the new law aims to make foreigners living in German eligible for citizenship after five instead of eight years of being based in the EU country.

In cases where applicants are “exceptionally well integrated,” naturalization would be possible after three years, and the bill will also loosen restrictions on dual nationality.

The original article contains 358 words, the summary contains 183 words. Saved 49%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

If only obtaining another nation’s citizenship would automatically make you into a tolerant person healing all hints of nationalism.
