it seemed like a really weird decision for OpenAI to have an AI classifier in the first place. their whole business is to generate output that’s good enough that it can’t be distinguished from what a human might produce, and then they went and made a tool to try and point out where they failed.
Id make better people use it

Does the G20 ever deliver results?
It’s good for leaders to get together and talk to each other. But expecting something concrete to come out of this seems silly. That’s not the point. The “declaration” will just be the usual “we agree to work together for the betterment of humanity” or some vague bullshit.
it sucks more everywhere else
the idea that journalism can save america if only they inform enough people is a perspective only held by journalists. america knows what’s going on. they don’t need to be told. and they’re okay with it. only 1/3 of the electorate voted against trump in 2016, and approximately 1/3 voted against him in 2020, and it looks like about the same 1/3 will vote against him in 2024. and we’ve all seen what he’s been doing.
it’s not some secret that Trump is an authoritarian and republicans would rather cheat and win than lose a fair election. that’s terrifying and horrible, but it’s not news. everybody knows. and telling them isn’t going to change anything.
america is already a democracy. if they wanted different leaders, they could elect some.
the problem is that they don’t want different leaders. the leaders aren’t the only bigoted fucks.
“content recommendation is only for stupid people” is a brand new form of gatekeeping that i haven’t heard before!
Mastodon is a good reminder of why algorithmic feeds exist
The option for a chronological feed is nice, but without an algorithm filling in the gaps it’s really hard to get started on there

Alternate version: Chinese authorities save city from flooding by diverting the waters to less populated areas, saving lives and minimizing financial losses
i doubt they want to take it that far, but i’ve got to assume at least some of putin’s cronies are thinking if they goad him into something stupid enough, they can get rid of him and take over for themselves.
“His father” in this summary refers to the father of one of the victims, not the father of the man accused of selling poison to suicidal people.
Food production is 35% of global greenhouse gases. Meat accounts for 60% of the emissions from food production. So yeah, if we cut global meat consumption in half it would absolutely make a dent.
Blaming the corporations is just a convenient way of putting the responsibility on somebody else. You can’t eat beef and then blame the farmer for the emissions caused by cattle production. You can’t drive a big truck and then blame the oil companies for the emissions. You can’t fly around the world and then blame the airlines. Corporations are selling stuff to people. Their emissions look huge because they’re the aggregate emissions of millions of people.
fun fact: if you try to actually boil a frog, it jumps out of the pot. frogs aren’t that dumb.
nothing about using a USB-C cable inherently means it has to support USB3.
framing it as “limits it to USB 3 Speeds” is misleading. iPhone has only ever supported USB 2, all they’re doing here is continuing to not upgrade to USB 3. the meeting where somebody proposed it went like this:
hey, should we put a USB 3 chip in the new iPhone?
nah, let’s just keep using the same one as the last generation
There’s two types of ambassadors: for countries you have tense relationships with, you send the professional diplomats who are really good at negotiating for things without starting wars.
For countries who are friends and you aren’t going to have tough negotiations with them, you send somebody who has good connections to the president. The ambassador gets a cushy job for 4 years that’s basically a reward, and the foreign country gets the message that an ambassadorship there is treated as a reward for the president’s friends, which strengthens the relationship
so… all those people who argued that trump getting indicted because is no big deal because an indictment is not a conviction, and it’s all poltical… they feel the same way about this, right?
