I think these kinds of comments are harmful to the discourse because there a good deal of nuance missing.
For one, it’s pretty reductive to call them ‘Japanese who’ve done bad things’ when who you’re talking about is dead or on their death beds. That’s not who the monument is for or about.
Historical monuments aren’t for attributing the sins of grandparents to their grandchildren. It’s about humanzing the victims and teaching people of this generation what was allowed to happen in the past. It’s about teaching them the dangers of complacency and the complicit nature of being a bystander.
If it’s worth anything, 4,300 people signed a petition against the removal and many protested in person.
Yes, Japanese people as a whole are severely lacking when it comes to acknowledging the atrocities committed by their country. No, Japanese people today are not personally responsible for them. The better we are at separating acknowledgement from responsibility, the easier time we will have convincing people to remember them.

True. It could be far better, but one thing China did vastly improve on since the 1950s is bringing women into the workforce and providing them with a far greater degree of autonomy and access to real education than women previously experienced.
This might not sound like much since this has happened to varying degrees in many countries, but it’s understated how socially regressive Chinese views on women historically were (and still are). Not saying things are good now, because China is still rife with gender inequality issues. Just pointing out how disgusting and ingrained Confucian views on womanhood are and how much of a stain it has left on Chinese society.
Academic performance is dictated by access to good educators which has always been dictated by wealth.
The facade of merit has always been used to justify casting away ‘lazy people who don’t study enough’ when the reality is that not everyone can afford private tutors, exotic sports, cram school, travel experience, and every other paid tactic to overstuff kid’s resumes.
‘If you think America is bad’ is wholly unnecessary when you consider that socialized healthcare hardly exists, public education is a living corpse of severely underpaid teachers, mass shootings (I’ve been in one), mandatory cost of car ownership, and so many other fucked up things.
I’m not saying that Japan is a good place to live, because it has a myriad of it’s own problems and I personally wouldn’t want to live there. I just think we should give people some credit for the shit Americans put up with too.
Girl boring guy quirky.
It’s probably a bot. Nothing they say makes any sense.
Reminder that good is not the enemy of perfect. It is much easier to convince 100 people to eat 10% less meat than to convince 10 people to become vegetarian.
I’ve started eating vegetarian several days a week and all it’s done is introduce me to some amazing tasting food that I haven’t tried before because of the dumb stigma that vegetarian means not tasty. I find that I enjoy some of these vegetarian dishes more than it’s meat counterpart because it’s not ruined by tough overcooked tasteless meat.
It’s worse than that. The snow crab population is close to 10% of what it was in 2009. The point is, this isn’t the first time there was a major decline in the snow crab population. It’s been dramatically but consistently plummeting over the last decade.
The crab population only ‘halved’ in 2019 because of a small resurgence in the population in 2018. In reality, the crab population is back on its usual course of being completely screwed by climate change.
Fishermen might not have PhDs but they’re not idiots. The snow crab population didn’t just vanish over night, it’s been falling year by year. Not to mention there are size limitations to legally harvesting snow crabs to keep the population sustainable, and being a fisherman necessitates a minimum degree of awareness of crab sustainability whether it’s for legal or practical reasons.
Unless you are either female, a minority, young, or have chronic pain in which case any mention of pain you have, no matter how extreme, is considered a drug seeking attempt.
The ER will diagnose people based on their race, sex, gender, and age before they’ll diagnose you based on your symptoms. It doesn’t matter how much you are suffering, how much pain you are in, or how close you are to killing yourself because you can’t take it anymore. ER doctors have no empathy unless you fit a certain demographic.
Try going door to door convincing people or something or just stop fucking complaining all the time holy shit.
Are you the one guy who tries to walk up to corporate front desks with a resume and firm handshake, loudly asks for a job, only to realize how out of touch you are 3 after the receptionist tells you applications are all online now?
This is part of the problem of our current political climate. I don’t know how you can constitute ‘not bullying’ as ‘accepting them’, but the complete lack of nuance in every conversation is what drives radicalization.
You can’t ‘bully’ transphobes into being an ally. That’s not how people work.
I get it. Transphobes are pieces of shit with the most punchable faces. But when you find yourself staring down into one, you need to ask yourself if you are going say what feels good and right to you, or what will make them just a little less transphobic to the next trans person they meet.
Deradicalization doesn’t happen overnight. It may take transphobes a hundred, ten, or even just one trans person to show them undeserved kindness before they realize they were wrong.
I’m not saying it’s anyone’s job to do this. I’m saying that sometimes, maybe a trans person or an ally may be having a good day and find it in themselves to deal with transphobic bullshit just to show transphobes that they are the better person. If they do, I’m saying that we shouldn’t ruin all the progress and emotional labor they’ve invested in by bullying the transphobe.
Not saying it’s anyone’s job to do this, but bullying transphobes doesn’t deradicalize them.
You’re either someone who forgot to put a /s or billionaire boot licker.
Everyone who doesn’t get it needs to read this.
Imagine making sexism and homophobia your entire personality and world view, and then crying ‘wahhhhh!’ when everyone thinks you’re a steaming hot pile of diarrhea.
People without chronic pain be making their entire personalities about going outside and doing things painlessly. /s
People will shit on crystals believers in one breath and tell people to ‘respect other’s religion’ in another or gloat about their MBTI assessment. The cognitive dissonance is unreal.
I don’t believe in either but at least I’m consistent. If you’re not, then you’re just finding an excuse to hate on a hobby that primarily attracts women.
This is the same thing that happens to anything that women likes: pumpkin spice lattes, uggs, horoscopes, tarot cards, rose, etc. It’s seen as trivial and stupid no matter how banal the average person’s interest are regardless of gender.
