Fair points. I’m warming up to the idea of making votes public so that people don’t have a false sense of privacy. I wish votes were actually private, but maybe it’s not a big deal if your account can’t be easily traced back to you in real life.
ActivityPub can’t evolve? Is there some insurmountable technical blocker?
I suspected this would be an issue and have avoided voting on controversial posts. But if everyone did as I do, there would be no open discussions about pressing topics.
It’s confusing enough understanding how federation works for the less technically inclined. I don’t think we should also expect them to figure out which instance is privacy-conscious. Privacy of votes should be baked into Lemmy. Even kbin users shouldn’t be able to see it.
If users want to advertise their approval/disapproval of posts they can use public comments in tandem with private votes.

Incidently, I used the painter’s tape today for the first time! Worked just fine :)
It’s probably supposed to be a Godzilla-like creature.
Simple questions with known answers might be a way to weed out malicious/untrustworthy responders.
The Gemini logo next to the word “Experiment” makes me suspicious.
Are they trying to train an AI?
Dual booting is also an option.
If the ad is short and subsidizes free wifi, I ain’t mad. But if the ad is unreasonably long, or if I have to keep watching ads every x minutes to use WiFi, it becomes a problem. Not sure what the case is here, but it should be spelled out on the screen so we know what we’re getting ourselves into.
Costs €5 but you can only play it once
Jokes aside, cool concept :)
After carrying this in my pocket for a few days, my thoughts so far:
Sliding a straw over the tape as a sheath hasn’t proved necessary so far. Doing so would add bulk, making the deployment of adjacent tools difficult or requiring a reduction in the amount of tape stored on the bit driver.
The thick gorilla tape makes it impossible to open the adjacent pliers without first opening the bit driver because the pivot point of the pliers sticks out. Putting the thicker tape closer to the bit (swapping positions of the painter’s tape and gorilla tape) may alleviate this, though I’ll have to try it to confirm. Otherwise, I’ll have to reduce the amount of tape stored lower on the bit driver.
Isn’t chromium open source? How are the APIs a secret?
I’m not sure. It’s the first I’ve ever heard of it. The Western academic approach to Islamic studies is historically rooted in refuting Islam’s credibility instead of objectively studying it, so you’ll hear all sorts of wild assertions and conclusions that would make a five year old Muslim laugh. It may be improving these days, but I don’t keep current with this stuff. Anyways, Mecca is literally in the Arabic text of the Quran, so it’s not some translator filling in the gaps with interpretation:
The article you mentioned tries to be balanced with point and counterpoint. There are some sweeping assumptions being made in that article as well.
I will say that if Mecca was Petra, many historical events occurring between mecca and medina become impossible. Battle of Badr, Uhud, etc. The tribes involved in the above events also didn’t reside in Petra.
It comes across as an outsider’s fun little thought experiment. Very orientalist in its approach.
Are mecca and medina even in that circle? Yemen definitely isn’t. Image is definitely false.
Yeah I’m totally sure the Brits didn’t break a single thing shipping artifacts to their big fancy museum. Let’s ignore all the mummies Europeans ground up into powder and ingested as “medicine”. Savagely eating dead humans with the same mouths that say brown people are too savage to take care of their own artifacts.
