That was my take too. Their overall point wasn’t bad but the start was a complete non sequitur that made me question if I wanted to finish because it’s a bad foundation for their actual argument.

My guess is that he says it just to keep his personal beliefs from being assailable and being challenged. He can ask questions of others to try and make points and insulate himself. 
Disillusioned “open minded” republicans like my brother for one. He was telling me that Dems should run him to appeal to anti-Trump Republicans to prevent Trump from winning. He’s a pretty smart guy who somehow got convinced that JAQing off is a good basis for philosophical thought and denies that he has any firm beliefs and is open to anything that he thinks sounds convincing.
