I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to casually learn a language. Even if you just do a little bit every day. Exercises are only a couple minutes long, but I spend around 15 to 30 minutes per day learning, and it’s going a lot better than I expected.
I think the common denominator for all these things are people. People are pretty terrible in large numbers behind anonymity.
I don’t doubt that many proposals were made well before 9/11, but that attack certainly proved a catalyst in getting them approved.
Basically: we want to control citizens > citizens don’t want to be controlled > create a scenario in which they want to be controlled > control citizens
Might take a few years between implementation and the desired result, but politics is always a slow march towards authoritarianism.
Also, the fact it was labelled as the counter terrorism act. Not much call for a counter terrorism act of there isn’t much terrorism happening. No better way to say “we need this” than an actual terrorist attack happening.

I always held that 9/11 was dubious. Not an “inside job” per se, but definitely a case of “we’re gonna turn our backs for just a second, and you terrorists better not do something silly while we’re not looking!”
One of the biggest things that will always stick out to me: the WMDs. They were adamant Iraq had them. They said they had actual evidence. None of it was true. It all came across as an excuse for ol’ George to go in and try to finish what daddy started in '91.
Just to be clear as well, I think other conspiracies such as the controlled demolition of the towers and the fake plane at the pentagon are bullshit. I don’t have my tinfoil hat on that tightly.
That’s actually how I do my Lemmy feed. I have one chance to comment on a thread and if I don’t do it, when the page refreshes I lose it forever.
I’ve learned to accept that there are just some things the universe never wanted me to comment on.
With how wearily often this seems to happen nowadays, I feel like if I was working somewhere like this I’d be looking at new work immediately as soon as I knew it was getting taken over.
Ideally, there should be some kind of way to prevent this happening in the first place.
But it’s easy for me to say this kind of thing from my pedestal. The only opinions that matter are from those who are involved. There’s nothing more depressing and scary than to know you could be jobless at a moment’s notice.

The closest comparison you made was to the cyoa book, but that’s only for the part where it gives me options. It has to have the “intelligence” to decipher what I’m asking it and then give me the options.
The fact it can do that faster and more efficiently than a human is exactly what I’d expect from it. Things don’t have to be groundbreaking to be useful.
To be fair, it is useful in some regards.
I’m not a huge fan of Amazon, but last time I had an issue with a parcel it was sorted out insanely fast by the AI assistant on the website.
Within literally 2 minutes I’d had a refund confirmed. No waiting for people to eventually pick up the phone after 40 minutes. No misunderstanding or annoying questions. The moment I pressed send on my message it instantly started formulating a reply.
The truncated version went:
“Hey I meant to get [x] delivery, but it hasn’t arrived. Can I get a refund?”
“Sure, your money will go back into [y] account in a few days. If the parcel turns up in the meantime, you can send it back by dropping it off at [z]”
Done. Absolutely painless.
