  • I remember reading his blog like 25 years ago and it was pretty interesting. Some funny stories, thought experiments, interesting comments. I remember that he was trying to help some young author get into papers. The idea for comic was solid but drawing wasn’t good enough so they organized a competing for artists and blog readers voted. Other time he told people to write phrases that sounded like they mean something but didn’t and then made it into a song. Supposedly that’s how The Beatles wrote their lyrics. At some point he got married and become a stepfather so he wrote about that as well. Stuff like that. He wasn’t that famous, the internet wasn’t that big, it was all just for fun.

I stopped following it for couple of years and next thing I know he got divorced, his new girlfriend was 20 something Instagram model and he started writing about how great Trump was. WTF happened?

  • I’m also fine with them using data they can get for free like, I don’t know, weather data they collect themselves?

Data hosted by private individuals and open source projects is not free. Someone has to pay for hosting and AI companies sucking data with army of bots is elevating the cost of hosting beyond the means of those people/projects. They are shifting the costs of providing the “free” data on the community while keeping all the profits.

Private data used without consent is also not free. It’s valuable, protected data and AI companies are simply stealing it. Do you consider stolen things free?

I see your attitude is “they don’t hurt me personally and I don’t care what they do to other people”. It’s either ignorant or straight antisocial. Also a bit bootlickish.

  • Ok, so you think it’s ok for big companies to break the laws you don’t like, cool. I’m sure those big companies will not sue you when you infringe on some of their laws you don’t like.

And I like the way you just ignored the two other issues I mentioned. Are you fine with AI bots slowing sites like Codeberg to a crawl? Are you fine with AI companies using personal data without consent?

  • This looks exactly like hundredths of videos that were posted on r/acab all the time long before ICE. Those are the same people using the same tactics. Even de fat guy flashing light into the camera to prevent recording is exactly what police does all the time. The only difference is that this time no dog was killed. Fascism in US was brewing for a long time and unaccountable police force was an important ingredient. This is a lesson for everyone else: don’t let your police get away with it, don’t give them any privileges or you may end up like US. The scary part is that people did try to fight it. Protests after George Floyd murder were massive. Sadly they were derailed by the “abolish police” crowd (maybe on purpose?) and “rising crime” scare tactics. Right now I’m not sure what we can do in Europe other than stay vigilant.

  • I’m not saying no one rally believes this shit. I’m saying believers are not the real problem. How would you fight believers? Ban religion? The problem are the corrupt institutions and weak laws. The solution is to pass laws that actually protect people. Roe v. Wade wasn’t abolished because people started believing harder. Support for abortion is actually fairly stable and grew in recent decade. What changed is that Republicans took over the Supreme Court and cooked a state level lawsuit that let them abolish it. All those cases are like that. Getting mad at “true believers” will lead you to nowhere. You should be mad at Democrats for failing to pass laws on federal level when they had the chance.

  • They sure are homophobic but they don’t normally sue schools to shield their children from LGBT books just like they don’t normally go to court to let them discriminate gay couples in their bakery. Lawsuits like that cost money. If you appeal and appeal up to the Supreme Court it costs serious money. These lawsuits are politically motivated hit jobs sponsored but right wing donors and executed by right wing think tanks. People really need to realize this is how they operate now. Those are not some grassroots movements or random Christians trying to “protect” their kids. Those are all well prepared, targeted actions, sometimes planned and executed over many years. This is how they overturned Roe v. Wade, this is how they took control over public libraries and this is how they will take over education.

  • Article 50

    1. Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements.

    2. A Member State which decides to withdraw shall notify the European Council of its intention. In the light of the guidelines provided by the European Council, the Union shall negotiate and conclude an agreement with that State, setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal, taking account of the framework for its future relationship with the Union. That agreement shall be negotiated in accordance with Article 218(3) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. It shall be concluded on behalf of the Union by the Council, acting by a qualified majority, after obtaining the consent of the European Parliament.

    3. The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement or, failing that, two years after the notification referred to in paragraph 2, unless the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period.

    4. For the purposes of paragraphs 2 and 3, the member of the European Council or of the Council representing the withdrawing Member State shall not participate in the discussions of the European Council or Council or in decisions concerning it.

A qualified majority shall be defined in accordance with Article 238(3)(b) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

    1. If a State which has withdrawn from the Union asks to rejoin, its request shall be subject to the procedure referred to in Article 49.

There’s nothing about paying for the reinstatement of border controls. If I remember correctly EU wanted UK to pay whatever they agreed to pay into the budget before brexit and it was all part of the negotiations.

  • Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Couple of years ago this was put on hold because Brazil wouldn’t stop burning the Amazon. Last year Brazil approved so called “Devastation Bill” that rolled back many environmental protections but I guess EU is too weak now to further delay this trade deal.

Meanwhile in Argentina Milei is celebrating signing this deal while praising Trump, who’s trying to undermine EU.

Not sure if it’s a good deal for EU or a sign of desperation. EU used to use its deals to shape the world. Now they are celebrating a deal which will strengthen our opponents in Argentina while capitulating on environment in Brazil.
