News@lemmy.world•Bill Gates testifies Epstein pressured him using knowledge of his affairsEnglish
1·6 days agoThere isn’t evidence of paedophilia yet. There are leaked photos of him holding scantily clad women around the waist in the files, so the sex slave rapist part at least is likely to be true. Especially when combined with emails to Epstein about him worrying he gave his then wife an STD and asking how to sneakily cure her of whatever it was, and what his ex wife has said about their divorce.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How One Media Company Is Fighting Manga’s Major Piracy ProblemEnglish
2·6 days agoThere’s no appropriate compensation for creators of manga, and at the same time, all the publishers, they don’t receive income or revenue because of the piracy issues,” Ugaki said. “Then they cannot allocate enough budget to create the next works or next line of work, so this influences the entire ecosystem of this manga industry.
This frames it like pirates hurt their bottom line which isn’t logically sound given they just acknowledged no official English translation exists for the majority of manga.
That’s where Orange aims to make real change with its digital cross-publisher manga app emaqi, scaling official translations of never-before-available titles in a creator-friendly way.
I’m not installing any DRM data harvester ridden app or paying a subscription. I want a Bandcamp equivalent for digital manga and paper books.

Technology@lemmy.world•400+ Arch Linux AUR Packages Compromised in a Supply Chain Attack Deploying InfostealersEnglish
2·7 days agoI try to not use any, I have 6 and 4 of those are maintained by the developer, not some rando.
One I really dislike is that CachyOS when you install their gaming software bundle…it uses the AUR version of Heroic Games Launcher instead of their own repo and CachyOS does not maintain the Heroic AUR AFAIK. I guess because AUR updates more frequently than their own repo? I think it’s bad practice.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•how do you feel about hv bypasses?English
61·8 days agoThe only way I’d touch a bypass like this is with a sacrificial PC which would never connect to the internet/home LAN ever again. I’d still have to come up with a way to get the files onto it in a safe way after the first game gets run with a bypass.
This lvl 0 stuff can potentially overwrite firmware, so a wiped storage drive isn’t even enough* to be safe as I understand it.
Not very realistic.

Games@lemmy.world•Microsoft admits Game Pass price hike drove away "millions" of subscribersEnglish
3·8 days agoI never subbed even after using free trials because all of these subscription services follow the same capitalist shareholder corporate path, doesn’t matter what it’s for.
Initially cheap, good “value” and designed to be habit forming to retain their userbase. Operate at a loss. Then they jack the price up every year once they hit a magic number userbase goal and start cutting costs at the same time. Quality drops, price goes up.

There’s many studies, so here’s two:

Article: https://www.sciencefocus.com/space/how-elon-musks-dying-satellites-could-hurt-the-ozone-layer
tl;dr: the massively increased rate of rocket launches and re-entry satellite burn-ups is creating a significant amount of pollution that is probably damaging the Ozone layer.
Well not to worry, all these internet swarm satellites might cause another one.

I was thinking about:
Server costs, vast increase of bad actors and bots, legal scrutiny, international government narrative manipulation. Overall quality drop from LCD majority who aren’t typically early adopters of any new social platform. Stuff like that.
This is your first comment on your new account and you chose to be an asshole. Congratulations.
