Christians and Catholics permanently steered me away from being religious before I was even in high school.

Let’s say there’s a pair of new parents, and that they don’t have family support. This is already a common reality for many new families.

Let’s say that now there’s a mandated enlistment because of a war. Which parent will go? Will they play rock paper scissors, or will they have to trust the government to randonly decide for them? Is it ethical for the government to decide who goes? Is it ethical for them to make new parents make that choice?

If they’re both going, who will care for the young child? I certainly wouldn’t trust strangers to watch babies en masse if the parents would be gone for a very long time at minimum.

Maybe mandated enlistment isn’t where it’s at, and maybe we should also be making sure that we’re giving people a reason to want to fight for their country again. Laws against fleeing will only do so much when we have such a large planet.

Do you do a better job when you’re forced to do something, or do you do a better job when you’re passionate about something?

I hope that works better for other schools than it did for mine.

Most of the students that went to the school that I went to opted for a “spare” class instead of taking photography, business, arts, programming, or any of the other creative courses. The tools were there in my case, but most people just ignored them in favour of being able to leave school early, or in favour of taking an extra long lunch. They ignored the after school stuff too, because they wanted to spend time with their friends somewhere else.

We had a pretty good photography course too, they covered almost everything and there was even an option to take it for multiple years/grades if you wanted to learn even more about it. The kids at my school who usually did things like Tik Tok and Vine in the bathroom didn’t seem to really care for those courses. Social media was just fun for them, they never intended on making anything of it.

There has to be some solution that we aren’t seeing yet. There has to be some common ground between “let the kids do whatever they want, regardless of their education” and “dystopian hell”.

It would also help if kid’s parents were more involved overall, although you could also argue that a huge part of the cause is the insane hours that many of the parents have to spend working to let the family survive.

This all sucks. I hope someone is able to make your idea work, truly. We need a solution, asap.

If a kid sees their mom and dad smoking all the time, they’ll probably start to believe that it’s not as dangerous as other people say. “They seem to be fine, so I should be fine too.” I legitimately heard this often while growing up, sadly. If you grow up around a bad smell, you might not think of it as “bad” smell, since you’re already used to it.

If someone is already depressed and hates life, they might not care about the harm that they’re causing themselves 20 years later. I’ve known way too many people who didn’t believe that they would stay alive until adulhood. Some of these people started these bad habits expecting to not have to stick around long enough to deal with the consequences.

Throw in the chaos of the last handful of years, along with the constantly depleting mental health resources, and I can’t say that I’m really all that suprised.

Even today, many countries have certain types of people trying to obliterate what’s left of mental health resources. Then they wonder why their kids are struggling with mental health.

I can only imagine what it’s going to be like for Gen Alpha when they get older, poor kids.

I agree though. It would be nice to not have to worry about being falsely sued, but other people have other ideas. These people give a terrible name to other people like the poor lady from the McDonald’s case. I can’t imagine coffee so hot that it fuses skin together. It’s horrible that she also had to deal with the media after being put through pain that would be incomprehensible for most of us.

If suing is intentionally only done for a happy quick buck, I think it’s just as bad as a scam, if not worse. Instead of just taking money, it also takes the person’s time. Time that people need for work, family, necessities, etc.

A lot of Canadians know about the dangers of ground beef, isn’t it the same in the US? Most of the people commenting on this mention nothing about the food safety aspect. You can catch a lot of nasty things from undercooked meat.

It’s not like you can sterilize the entire cow, and most restaurants don’t have their own slaughterhouse in the back. The whole reason that system works is that we cook the beef thoroughly. If we don’t cook it thoroughly, lots of those nasty things might still be there. You can’t see, smell or taste most of them.

If I absolutely HAD to serve a customer that, I would likely add a waiver too. I would probably prefer to just send them away instead, though. One person’s whims would be a shite reason to lose your restaurant license, regardless of where that person is from.

I think it’s another one of those things where words and phrases change meaning over time.

Righteous is equal to justifiable. Indignant is equal to showing anger.

Logically, it should mean justifiably angry. Often times, people will just ignore and skip over the first word and will only properly read “indignant”.

I think it’s similar to when people say words like “irregardless”. They use it to mean “regardless”. If you break the word down, the double negative makes it a positive. It looks like it should read as being the same as “regarding”, but people had other ideas lol

I think I’ve decided to not publish anything that I want to keep ownership of, just in case. There’s an entire planet’s worth of countries, which will all have their own sets of laws. It takes waay too long to polish something, only to just give it away for free haha. Someone else is free to do that work if it is that easy. No skin off my back.

I think it’s similar to many other hand-made crafts/items. Most people will buy their clothes from stores, but there are definitely still people who make beautiful clothing from hand better than machines could.

Don’t even get me started on stuff like knitting. It already costs the creator a crap ton of money just for the materials. It takes a crap ton of time to make those, too. Despite the costs, many people just expect those knitted pieces for practically free. The people who expect that pricing are also free to go with machine-produced crafts/items instead.

It comes down to what people want, and what they’re willing to pay, imo. Some people will find value in something physically being put together by another human, and other people will find value in having more for less. Neither is “wrong” necessarily, so long as no one is literally ripped off. (With over 8 billion people, it’s bound to happen at least once. I feel bad for whoever that is.)

That being said, we’ll never be able to honestly say that the specific skills and techniques that are currenty required are the exact same. It would be like calling a photographer amazing at realism painting because their photo looks like real life. Photographers and painters both have their place, but they are not the exact same.

I think that’s also part of what’s frustrating so many artists. Coding AI is not the same as using the colour wheel, choosing materials, working fine motor control, etc. It’s not learning about shadows, contrast, focal points, etc. I can definitely understand people not wanting those aspects to be brushed off, especially since it usually takes most of a lifetime to achieve. A music generator and a violin may both make great music, but they are not the same, and they require different technical skills.

I’ll never buy AI art if I have any say in the matter. I’ll support handmade stuff first, every time.

Don’t worry, I’m not actually taking this personally, but please remember that there is a very wide range of requirements for transport. I would absolutely LOVE to be able to bus to get to my job, but the city buses that I need don’t even start running until my shift starts. Biking would be wildly dangerous, as there is no way to get there while avoiding passing by poorly lit ramps for major highways. Fuck me for that, I guess.

My city also recently made the (dumb imo) decision to cut back on public transit. Now we have a bunch of seniors that have to walk a long ways if they want to take the bus. In some areas, good luck to you if it’s winter. Sometimes the buses will miss those stops altogether, usually without warning. Not great.

My region also completely axed public transportation between cities, without providing a replacement.

If we finally got decent public transportation, you can bet your arse that I would use it again. I do need a job to eat though, and staying alive sounds nice sometimes.

We should point more of this focus and ire at the yackadoodles who insist on removing the option of public transport. I certainly didn’t vote for this shit. It used to be good, and I used to use it daily.

Up to this point, the winters where I live have definitely been getting warmer.

When I was a kid, it wasn’t uncommon to have stretches of -30°c, and we used to hit or almost hit -40°c once or twice per winter. It seems like that dropped. Now, the stretches are around -20°c and we hit the -30°c once or twice per year. Instead of snow, we’ve been getting lots of freezing rain.

It used be be rare to hit 30°c in the summer, but we’ve been getting many more days that hit around 40°c. Last summer was brutal, and I hadn’t seen smog from wildfires up until then. It was practically unheard of where I live.

Just wait for another handful of years. The weather is already becoming increasingly more difficult to predict.

I saw a forecast earlier where the weather person was saying that either the models are broken, or that certain parts of North America will hit historically cold temperatures. If it was accurate, parts of California might drop down to almost -40°c.

People need to learn that climate change isn’t only extra heat in the summertime. It’s a very complex system with lots of variables. I wish more people actually took the time to learn a bit about it. Freaky shit.

IIRC the protests in Canada were also super controversial, especially for the people who lived there at the time.

Even stuff like bitcoin would be susceptible to your concerns about government overeach. Investing could also easily be a crapshoot, because your entire life saving would still be reliant on someone who doesn’t know or care you.

This might only be me, but when I’m constipated, my go to is hydration and lettuce.

I’ll get myself a nice big salad, and eat it super fast. The idea is that if you eat it fast, you won’t chew as much. The partially unchewed lettuce can help irritate your guts into doing a bit of a clean cycle. (Plus, veggies are already great for constipation.)

Crazy shit.

I didn’t see it coming, but the entire department I worked at during my last job was laid off only two weeks after i started my new job. The cheeky buggers waited until people left for the Christmas weekend to call them and tell them.

Yet they act all baffled and suprised when people quit.

Part of me wants to be upset, but especially since these are clothing manufacturers, I have to wonder if the people handling the returns have the same problems that I did when I used to process them.

It was my first job out of highschool (through a temp agency), it was my first day, and I did some returns. You know, writing down what the products were, why they were returned, the order numbers yadda yadda.

Everything was cool until I got this package with a LOT of sharp pins in it saying “you obviously need needles to sew the clothes properly”. There was only ONE thread loose, and this lady felt that making a complete stranger find sharp needles hidden in fabric was ok. Part of me hopes that that person finds the same kindness in life that they seem ok to give to strangers. Part of me wishes that it wasn’t such a common thing.

Some returns had legitimate rotting garbage in them, and a lot of them were only worn once and then were returned because they “only needed it for party, need money back now”. You can only see so much ridiculousness before you have enough, you know?

As a former employee, the fact that that company essentially paid for those needles and for the rotting garbage to be sent for other people to deal with was enough to make me quit. It’s not worth my health, full stop. It never will be. That incident also made me lose a lot of faith in most of the general public. Part of me wishes that that particular person experiences the same level of “goodwill” that they give to others. I don’t like wishing ill on peopld, but I also don’t want to wish on good things for bad people. Most of us manage to submit returns without including a hazard, and it takes next to no effort at all. I don’t even have to think about whether or not to do that, personally. It’s a no-brainer.

As long as the in-person returns are still valid (within reason) and it’s stated very clearly that online returns will cost money before purchasing, I don’t really see the issue. Just put that information where they will read it (or hear it if it’s voiced) and it should be OK.

It will help save the people who still have to deal with these insane returns for minimum wage. Fuck the overhead profit, and fuck the people who take their rage out on random minimum wage employees. (Don’t do that literally ofc.)

Take it up with the people who might be able to actually do something to fix your problem, if you’re that angry about the product. I will absolutely think much less of you if you personally take out your business complaints on the minimum wage employees.

Hypothetically, you might be good having kids in you thirties, but one or both of them might have a condition or disability that gets worse with time.

I know people in their early 20s with bad arthritis, and a lot of people want to be able to chase after and run around with their kids. Sometimes chronic pain/illness can remove that option.

You can both be right, you know. Many of us also agree with what this person was saying.

I used to want kids. I will refuse to have kids unless I can afford them, and until I can GUARANTEE that their human rights won’t be stripped away by the whims of stupid people who are completely disconnected from reality. I won’t bring a new life into a world that’s rushing towards climate oblivion, either.

No kidding. Just earlier today, I was looking for a kind of niche tool used to wrap pallets in plastic, and I found nothing on google about it. It kept showing me everything BUT what I was looking for.

On bing, I found just about all of the information I needed about it. Turns out it’s niche partially because it’s made in my province, which I also found out from bing. Almost no one knows what I’m referring to when I mention it. It combines the technology of machine wrapping and hand wrapping, and it makes warehousing much easier sometimes.
