Hey good on her. I happen to be a fan of hers. Let me save the interested a click to either of those terrible platforms (watch it if you want to see the full response, I’m cutting to the good part here):

The quote in question, I think from here: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/sep/20/fame-is-like-going-through-puberty-chappell-roan-on-sexuality-superstardom-and-the-joy-of-drag

“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” she says. “There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote – vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.” The change she wants to see in the US in this election year, she says instantly, is “trans rights. They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”

Twitter response, my transcription (2:00 mark): Roan: “So hear it from my mouth if you’re still wondering, no I’m not voting for Trump and yes I will always question those in power and those making decisions over other people and I will stand up for what is right and what I believe in and like, it’s always at the forefront of my projects and I’m sorry you fell for the clickbait.”

I agree with everything she said.

So I’m going to try and bridge the gap here since this is a weirdly toxic thread and I hope just by old (? Fuck I hope I’m not old) people. I’m a millennial, so here we go.

Chappell Roan is a Gen Z musician. I legitimately couldn’t name a single one of her songs. I’ve been told “here, listen to this” more than a dozen times. I still have no idea.

As she mentions in this video this is her third presidential election. She has never voted in an election where Donald Trump wasn’t the Republican nominee.

Think about that for a minute. Seriously. Imagine only viewing Republicans as the party of Trump. How fucked up is that? Hillary v Trump. Biden v Trump. Harris v Trump.

Remember voting for Hope in '08? I don’t care what you think about Obama now. Remember '08 Obama? You voted against McCain. Do you know how much I wish I could vote FOR McCain now? How much I wish I could vote FOR Romney now? We live in a fucking twilight zone now. I’m thrilled to vote for Harris and Biden before her. Biden for the last four years has been fucking bliss. Harris for the next four years is a god send.

But Biden isn’t above criticism. Harris isn’t above criticism. They are when compared to the orange blob but you can’t live in that fucking world.

It’s fucked up when you look at the world we’re in now. Some random gen z musician says I can’t endorse Harris? I get it. I’ve been there. She sure as shit isn’t endorsing Trump but to look at Harris and go “Fuck Yeah!”… that just isn’t happening.

Trump had pulled us SOOOOOO FARRRR off course. He’s ruined an entire generation. An entire generation, gone, wasted to Trump. It’s fucking horrible.

Gen Z, bless their hearts, didn’t go through what we went through. Luckily we’re homies with Gen Z. I’m not sure we fully understand each other but at the end of the day we agree with each other.

I don’t want to leave them out but Gen X stared this fight. Us Millennials kept it going. And finally we have the numbers with Gen Z. We’re going to move forward. We’re going to move past Trump. (If you can fucking vote this round GET OFF YOUR FUCKING ASS.)

Chappell Roan is your little sister. I don’t care that you don’t know who she is. She’s on our side. She’s speaking honestly. She isn’t quite as jaded as you are. She’s got a following. I don’t care what Taylor Swift said either, but she’s right. She agrees. We need to move forward.

I get it. She didn’t endorse Kamala. Whatever. She ultimately agrees with her. Not on everything. We still got work to do. We know Kamala is the next step. We understand this takes multiple steps. Voting for multiple steps isn’t sexy. “What do we want” “Change” “When do we want it” “Slowly over the next several years” That isn’t sexy. But bus stops aren’t sexy.

We’re taking a bus. You’re there. A weird dude is there wearing a cape. A weird lady is there petting a Beanie Baby. I don’t want to get on the bus either, but it’s going the way I want to go, so I’m getting on.

    Join us.

The first seven presidential elections of my lifetime included either a Bush or a Clinton on the ticket. Then the eighth had a Clinton very involved in the primary. The ninth had neither. And then the 10th had a Clinton on the ticket again. 10, 11, 12 - Trump. 8, 9, 11 - Biden.

I get what you’re saying, but this isn’t just a Trump thing. It’s getting old.

I agree completely. At a certain point you get a certain understanding of how this all works. I’m not happy about it and I’d like to change it (and when we have real primaries I’ve tried), but that’s where it’s at.

When you’re young and have only seen Trump v Democrat it’s a weird choice. I don’t say that to downplay how bad Trump is, but I do want to highlight that it’s a long term battle.

If you’re still pinning your hopes on electoral politics achieving meaningful change, you don’t really get it at all.

Electoral politics, especially at the Presidential level, are not where the majority of my hopes go. My hopes are more directed at local politics, Federal Representatives, State Representatives & City/Town Representatives.

That being said a Trump presidency is still a disaster and a Harris presidency comes with a lot of wins. So picking the right person (and their policies) is still important.

Gotta say, I don’t think we need Chappell Roan to weigh in. It’s one thing for like Taylor Swift who is a major cultural figure. We don’t need every person with a hit song to weigh in.

      Which hit song?

Are you talking about Pink Pony Club? HOTTOGO? Good Luck, Babe? Casual? Red Wine Supernova? My Kink is Karma?

She has many songs that have absolutely blown the fuck up this year. All of those that I listed are currently on the billboard top 100 and she’s had several more that made it on at some point in the last several months.

They had several songs in the top 100 this year? In 2024? The same year as the current election being discussed?

The point is she has a very large current following and therefore her words do have some influence on a large number of people. Maybe not you, but not everything is about you.

I’ll try to be more elaborate with my constructive criticisms.

        Can you please tell me:

        1. Who that is / why people might care

        2. What their message is

          1 person is famous

2 they don’t idolize either political party and don’t want to feel pressured into picking a party since neither is without flaws, later clariified that not wanting to feel pressured doesn’t mean they will be voting for Trump

It really is as simple as the headline and the post text.

You bluemaga are the ones that constantly whining about the youth vote not supporting your chosen geriatric neoliberal, so maybe don’t dismiss popular people among your most needed demo discussing politics.

I agree with you but also plead with you to drop that bluemaga shit. It seeks to divide. Again though agreed. Not a Democrat but I usually vote that way.

I disagree the Dems are losing them (the young) though. I think abortion and other xenophobic ideals from Republicans are driving them to the left. I’m here for it. Let’s get all those voices in the discussion. We need to be listening to them.
