It’s just an organ. How do you speak about your heart, or your stomach, especially when they make you suffer ?
I trust my brain for about 15 seconds when I wake up, before reality kicks back in.
Your brain is technically piloting a golem of flesh/bone that feeds it.
Except that you are the pilot.
We think of ourselves as our skin instead of the flying spaghetti monster that we are. Spindles of nerves and veins weird bulbous organs stuffed up in our meat jacket.
More like software running on a meaty hardware.
I am my brain, at least the forebrain. My issue is some of the other parts are trying their best, but they weren’t given all the tools they need for the environment I’m in.
Not sure if I’m maladapted or if my environment is just poor tho.
Psyche and Soma. Separate entities that work hand in hand but sometimes keep secrets from each other.
Your conscious brain is like 10% of your brain. The other 90% doesn’t follow instructions and needs to be carefully trained and complained about
Only people with ADHD have a cerebellum. For everyone else, it’s 100% prefrontal cortex. Crazy we even call it prefrontal, given that it’s how the entire brain functions, no exceptions.
Anyone else get tired of telling their heart to beat, diaphragm to move, and eyes to moisturize? Its God damn exhausting is what it is
you are now telling your eyes to moisturize (blink)
Mmm that was a good one. I think I’ll do it again. Mmm, blinking
The cerebellum sounds like a co-processor, like how old computers had math co-processors.
Still, everyone has one, it isn’t limited to ADHD.
This is looking like an interesting read: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10321758/#T1
I typically use the word accelerator. You can do things manually, but your brain has a bunch of autonomic accelerators for things like speech synthesis, hearing, vision, entity detection, social bonding modes, etc. Deviation in those are what causes neurodivergence. Deviations in affinities and identity are what causes the queer and aspec spectrums.
Sometimes my brain doesn’t take care of its flesh vehicle for a while; typical situation is I don’t get a shower or shave for a little too long. And then my brain becomes convinced that it doesn’t like itself very much. Then another part of my brain realizes what’s going on, but has learned that my brain isn’t very reliable, and is also fairly open to suggestion. So my brain takes a shower and shaves and puts on clean clothes, and then my brain is tricked into liking itself again.
It’s literally like playing peekaboo with your own self-esteem in the mirror.
I give my insides pep talks. It’s soothing and makes me think of the ways all of me is contributing to my lived experience. I’ll rub the back of my neck and thank my brain for remembering that tiny, essential detail when it normally feels like a seive. I’ll rub my tummy when it feels anxious and is sending anxiety through my body, and let it know I’m thankful for it but also can it please understand we’re not in danger. Totally. Normal. Things. Lmfao
Autistic experience is talking about your entire body this way. “The body is irritated” or “the body is overwhelmed”.
Especially when shutting down, thinking like that helps cope with the feeling of being “helplessly trapped”.
The meat demands nap time but the soul craves 16 hours of Rimworld.
“the body needs a sacrifice” - eats fried chicken
Eh, wat. Is there any sane person who after a day of, say, real hard studying, cannot distinguish that “my brain and mind are tired from all the load they’ve pulled, but I am actually relieved it is finally over”?
On today’s episode of “Neurodivergent people claiming normal human behaviour as neurodivergent”:
Except, every time I talk about my brain as if it was a separate entity to other people they get annoyed at the implication that my actions aren’t simply my pure and magical free will.
I’m only autistic though not ADHD. At least as far as I know. And this tends comes from any person (though typically allistic in particular), not just neurotypical people.
Volition and intent tends to line up with action in those that are neurotypical. A good example is the broken speech ordering disorder some people have either congenitally or due to trauma. They try and speak regularly, but the autonomic part of the brain responsible for converting that signal into verbal communication is borked.
Interestingly enough, even if it is working properly, you can still trip it up which is why we have tongue twisters and spoonerisms.
Well, yeah, no shit.
Maybe provide an example, because I’m picturing someone making a mistake and claiming it was “their brain that made them do it”. Which, ND or otherwise, is a lame ass excuse. If it actually was a direct consequence of being ND then I would at least expect the respect of discussing it in a mature way.
Trouble saying “socially constructive lies” instead of either uncomfortable silence or even just saying the uncouth thing out loud, avoiding talking over people and vocal volume control, hang ups relating to autistic perfectionism, obsessive behavior in general.
Like, these aren’t really things I can avoid doing. I know because I’ve tried. I mean, I can temporarily stop but that just usually leads to becoming incredibly burnt out, alienated, or depressed.
On a meta level, I don’t believe in free will anyway.
That makes sense, that wasn’t the mental image I had in my picture. It’s hard for me to understand why someone would react that way then if the sequence was, for example
A: Says something awkwardly too loud
A: “Sorry my brain made that too loud”
B: Disgusted look
In that interaction, person B is a jerk IMO.
I’ve had that interaction. Though not with those specific words.
Would you complain that someone with a speech disorder was disrespecting you for not speaking to you properly?
Did you not read my comment before responding? I explained what I was picturing & asked for an example of what they meant in case they weren’t aligned
I think I realised this the first time I heard someone talk about ego death or derealization as a result of a drug trip and I was like oh so like that feeling in between two rooms when you die and everything stops just before the new room’s program loads another you up?
You would be surprised how much of normal as “sane” is not normal as “the way most people are”
Yeah even anecdotally everyone I’ve ever got to know really well turned out to be just as fucked up as everyone else. But like some people do this kind of chemistry with their fucked-upedness where they hijack it to the benefit of themselves or others.
Pardon my subjectiveposting
It takes skill and a certain level of being humble. Yeah, I like such people too
It’s pretty much every post in this community.
Most people would probably just throw a blanket statement like “I’m exhausted” and call it a day.
Telling people “Sorry, my brain is tired” doesn’t really sound convincing to others, even though that best describes how I might feel.
Damn. True that
I hate my brain, it betrays me on a daily basis. If it was normal, my life would be so much better. So yes, yes, it is a separate entity from my essence! 🤣🤣
I am my own person, and my brain is just a passenger.
It really is. Haven’t you ever been trying to remember something, actively racking your brain to remember it, but it is completely lost. So you give up. You move on. Hours later, you’re talking to someone about dinner plans, driving in rush hour traffic, weighing the merits of Chinese vs Mexican, every part of your conscious mind handling the moment. And then suddenly your mind goes “DUSTIN HOFFMAN PLAYED CAPTAIN HOOK!”
That wasn’t “you”, the person, the conscious mind. That was a you that works backstage. They had to go down into the sub-basement to the deep stores, dig through a warehouse full of useless knowledge for the right factoid.
I call mine Derek. Derek just ran back up the stairs kicked in the door and delivered the query results after being dispatched hours ago. That wasn’t me that remembered that info. Derek did.
I’ve been calling mine Elmo for a couple decades. Because it’s little and annoying. Then that muskrat turd started getting called Elmo (I assume for the same reasons). I want my nickname for my subconscious back dammit
Courtesy of COVID I feel like a frustrated spectator dealing with poorer memory, and brain fog when I reach the limits of a much reduced intellectual stamina.
That shit byte me in many exams, it made me hate preparing for exams because I didn’t know if the effort was going to be worth it.
Untrustworthy little bastard 🧠
My brain is often an asshole and we argue every day.

It’s the “self” part that’s the illusion there. There’s just consciousness and its content. There’s no “you” in there that’s somehow separate from the process in your brain causing it to feel like something to be.
Yep, this is why it’s possible to “reason” ourselves into any position over time, we just have to feel a certain way for long enough for rational justifications to seem plausible.
(Makes it damn hard to derive meaning from anything after a while)
And feelings/emotions are just mental shortcuts or high speed memory caches like in a cpu. They can be changed as well. Read “how emotions are made” by Lisa Barrett Feldman if you want to know more.
Meaning sure, but enjoyment is still right there. Maybe a little absurdity too, for a taste of the numinous.
I wish I were someone who could derive enjoyment from meaningless things, but am not wired that way. Sounds like it’d be a blast.
Yeah, there’s me, and then there’s the One Who Knows Things. He’s not always helpful.
Encyclopedia: “Your mangled brain would like you to know there is a boxer called Contact Mike.”
I JUST WOKE UP! WHY WOULD I NEED THAT?! WHAT POSSIBLE STIMULUS COULD HAVE SUMMONED THAT?!
Brain: “you be seven missed text massages from Contact Mike”
Brain: “I said what I said”
And not always wise. Yet we seem to take its opinions at face value, and forget the true mind lingering behind, but always present
