I did one a few years ago. the total kit was around $200. this included the screen, some solder kit to modify brightness, and a new front screen glass.
I also took the opportunity to upgrade the case and li-ion battery.
all for a Christmas present for my kids that they never play…
Is that backlit? How? Gimme.

… Why not using an SP instead ?
SPs have hinges and don’t fair well with children. also, the handheld format is smaller so it’s slightly more difficult for children to hold onto.
finally, I had a crusty advanced from goodwill I had bought for around $3 that was the base.
Make sense
There’ve been tens of mods over the years for backlighting a GBA v1. Nowadays there’s clone hardware that plays anything via emulator.
I’m using an Anbernic clone. It also plays older gameboy games, some arcade cabinet games, NES, etc.
Build quality is not as good as I remember the gameboy being, but it’s still pretty decent. Especially for ~$70.
