Meme points out how Canadians often claim to acknowledge colonialism, yet defend the British commonwealth.

I’m… not sure I follow the logic here? The commonwealth is definitely the result of past colonialism, but that’s not the same thing as being present colonialism. As Canada is to this day ably demonstrating, they don’t need anybody’s help doing colonialism.

They’re responsible for colonising the entire world and have rich commonwealth buddies treating it like some club to bond over.

I get what what you’re saying, but I like the idea of hanging out with Australians and New Zealanders

The current commonwealth is a voluntary association, and includes countries which were never colonised by Britain. Sure, the monarch is the head, but AFAIK that’s purely symbolic.

I mean, if former British colonies and non-british colonies want to become and stay members, who are we to lecture them on colonialism?

I don’t think someone in Rwanda needs white westerners to lecture them on imperialism.

And it’s not as if the UK can get away with bossing around India any more.

Does commonwealth mean “wealth of the people”? Is that like tax money used for PDS and stuff? /gen
