Agencies will be barred from including an essay question on federal job applications asking candidates which of the president’s executive orders are most “significant” to them.

U.S. District Judge George O’Toole on Friday issued a stay order directing agencies to remove the question from all hiring announcements, after finding that the inclusion of the essay question likely violated job applicants’ First Amendment rights.

The Office of Personnel Management has until the end of the week to comply with the judge’s order and give notice to agencies that the essay question should be removed from current job postings. The stay order remains in effect until any further rulings in the case.
