OSM added a “official_name:en-US” field to hold “Golf of America” but the wiki says “In practice, renderers are unlikely to label the Gulf based on official_name:en-US=*”. Google is pretending like they are just being “neutral” on this, but somehow they are showing two names to other countries for the Gulf of Mexico and plan to do the same here.
That requires some action and that action took a choice. If they are gaslighting us into thinking they are not being political here, they are.
Keeping the name most people will use for it may require a small step to put in an override if they are just ingesting US names for US customers, but still, making that decision and taking that small step is far more neutral in these cases.
Android phones are still better than Apple phones, but you need to use a non-Google Android.
My Apple maps still says Lake Ontario. Hmmm.
