Critics have been quick to compare the controversy surrounding the White House and Russia to the Watergate scandal that forced President Richard Nixon to resign. But the Watergate drama took longer to unfold—more than two years—than many people may remember. Here’s a quick refresher of the events that led to Nixon’s resignation.

Watergate is also why we have fox news now…

Roger Ailes said essentially “If we only had a friendly media Nixon would never have had to resign.” Then he joined Murdock in creating fox news and they’ve since proven him correct. Make a Reich wing propaganda network and you can keep the voters in check, protecting them from reality.

My MAGA relative is a lifelong Nixon apologist. “He was just doing what everyone else was doing. Only difference is, he got caught.”

Point out to him that that’s like saying that everyone steals supplies from work, or everyone cheats on their wife.

Only something said by people with no morals, just fear of punishment.

At the time, even giant Nixon haters like Hunter Thompson were willing to accept his resignation and eventual pardon. People didn’t like it, but at the time the idea of a US President being sent to actual jail was difficult to imagine. There were no big protest marches, people just voted against Ford.

Unhappily, the right saw this and figured that the lesson was that they could get away with it next time.
