I still can’t believe coal is the reason there is mercury in fish. Fuck coal.

It’s the worst of all the fossil fuels. They all suck, but coal sucks the most. Expensive and dangerous to mine. Requires a buttload. Releases all sort of nasty pollutants. Doesn’t fully burn to CO2. And is slow to ramp so it’s only really good for a baseload.
If coal wasn’t used for iron smelting, it would have never been used to for power generation.
I honestly assumed a ton of ‘waste’ mercury just got dumped into the ocean before we knew that was bad. Which I guess is sort of what happened, it just went through the atmosphere first.

You can politicise it all you want but if everyone makes more money by avoiding coal then thats how things are going to go.
Of course in this case Trump just wants to divert money to his friends, and he will probably succeed, but at least its getting harder and harder to do as the wins for renewables just keep stacking up.
My small city just announced theyre going to shut down the gas network in 3 years. Basically their modelling says that with reduced demand due to cheaper electricity from renewables and better electrical tech, no one will want to pay for gas.
Obviously its become a political issue, but its only going to get more difficult to argue against the economics as time goes by.

Someone should tell his coal-invested cronies that if he really cared about coal, the US Navy would be using it to power all of its ships.
