I wish the industry would just adopt standards like what RetroAchevements already does that prohibits both ends of the spectrum. Excessive achievements (as well as multiplayer) get subsets, progression achievements still exist but mostly to track “beating” a game. Nothing too easy, although April 1sts “Baby Mode” set for FF8 was fantastic. Lol

Having a standard made it higher in my mind than Steam achievements. Technically PS and Xbox have set rules too but not nearly as well thought out (e.g. what classifies as a Bronze vs Gold) and still allow some real unoriginal bullshit lol

  • Huh, always weird when I see local news on my Lemmy feed.

FYI, South Bay is especially car brained, even my LA. We have a major refinery, some car manufacturer HQs, and I’m pretty sure more mechanics per capita than most of Cali. Long history with the automotive industry going back to the founding of a lot of these little cities.

It’s a shame, too. The beach cities are lovely places to walk and somehow have terrible biking and public transportation infrastructure. The people there can be a bit entitled, though (and it’s it just me or did this guy do it right outside his fucking home? Lol). But I don’t know a solution, it’s practically every other day someone is mowed down 'round here by a muscle car, and the areas East of El Segundo have a lot more waking families since we can’t afford cars.

A little hope, though. I saw they mentioned the Sawtelle area too. I used to live there, and not only did they 180 on that case, Stoner Park is now surrounded by mini roundabouts. So change does happen after this type of thing, and their jurisdiction is LA itself, not a smaller city in a city.

  • So many better examples in the comments; hell even Dragon Quest has more time travel in it than FF, lol.

Edit: people keeping score: 1, 8, 11, 13-2 and 14 have some form of time travel. 10 is debatable, as it’s complicated (and not time travel but spoilers to explain) but understandable if you think Tidus got zooped into the future. Oh and 15 has a time skip stasis, but I’m not counting that.

Only 8 and 13-2 have it as central theme, and 10s fake time travel. In 1 it’s a small thing regarding the big bad but pretty neat, 11 it’s an expansion, 14 is a location.

  • It’s kind of wild but Fortnite makes (or made?) way more money than UE royalties, like magnitudes more. UE is a boon to the industry to be sure, but somehow 5% of games’ revenue simply isn’t the same as insane people spending money on stupid skins and dances.

Now is UE was used for 20 games as big as Fortnite, they’d be fine but most AAA companies won’t use UE if they expect a huge haul, with a few exceptions of course.

  • I’ve seen it in reverse; people who saw the initial yassification of characters were impressed by the “rendering” but after a few days, have realized that perhaps it isn’t the creative intent to make everyone look like AI slop.

Plus even if the tech ends up being good, the demonstration (and subsequent response) is very much not. Shadows getting washed out, people’s arms disappearing, and other things, people looking it over realize it’s not even doing what it wants to do.

Maybe it’ll work out when the creators have control over it and can prevent it from undoing important stuff, like a character’s plot related scars or lighting effects used to show players where to go, but that’s all suspect until proven otherwise.
