News@lemmy.world•Two-thirds of Americans think Trump tariffs will lead to higher prices, poll saysEnglish
1·1 year agoThe next 4 years in the US are going to bring instability to the forefront.
US debt to GDP ratio is already an insane 120% . At some point along this path of ever increasing debt, people are going to see that USD is no longer safe and choose other currencies, or possibly crypto. Bank runs tend to happen all of a sudden when no one expects it. The same situation could theoretically happen in the US.
The reserve dominance shouldn’t be relied upon when we could simply raise a small amount of revenue with taxes on the wealthy to balance the books.

News@lemmy.world•Two-thirds of Americans think Trump tariffs will lead to higher prices, poll saysEnglish
15·1 year agoTariffs are a necessary tool, and can be positive in the long run to create revenue and lower trade deficits. They are a regressive tax, but there is some positive to making some imported goods more expensive in the US. It does discourage companies from importing everything. In moderation targeted tariffs can be good.
The debt is projected to be $50 trillion by 2034, so revenue does need to be increased somehow. Otherwise on the current track the US will be unable to service it’s debt.
Ideally they should just tax billionaires, but politically this is a lot easier for them.
The problem with tariffs is moreso on what they’re going to do with the revenue. The surplus will almost assuredly be used to give tax cuts to the rich, and the debt will likely be $50 trillion by 2028, not 2034.

457·1 year agoThere are some punctuation errors in your title. It should read:
Plex is “overhauling” its apps with a redesign and under-the-hood “upgrades”
Those who use Plex to access personal media will find that their libraries are in a
dedicated[hidden] tab, while the Watchlist will take up prime real estate in the top navigation section. Plex says it also streamlined the user menu for quick access to things like your profile, friends and watch history. So they’re hiding the entire point of Plex deep in the menu and promoting things that make them money. Enshittification.

politics @lemmy.world•The election that will take place at the DNC to replace the chair will decide the policy direction of the Democratic party. Let your voice be heard!English
177·1 year agoThat’s not a constructive approach. Doing nothing just means Republicans completely disasemble what remains of democracy in the US.
It has not collapsed yet. Democrats are electing a new chair RIGHT NOW (I don’t know the date, but in the next few weeks).
They are going to elect a centrist. We can stop them. Now is the time.
If the new DNC is progressive and inspires people, it will prevent reluctant Republicans from going full scorched earth.
A progressive platform will win Democrats the white house for the next 20 years. Ask FDR how I know.
This, right now, is the final chance we have to prevent collapse.
Spread the word, share & cross post.

331·1 year agoPlease spread, cross post, share, whatever; wherever you can. People should have input into the democratic policy platform, but they’re so brazen as to say the “center is where we need to be”.
These people, these few hundred people, are a big problem with the democratic party.
We need to take the narrative back from centrists. It can be done by telling the DNC what to do, not the other way around.

I don’t really know which journals are good/bad beyond the big names ones, nature, plos, elsevier, etc.
You won’t be banned for posting journal links. The only time that would happen was if it happened continuously and had a pattern and multiple reports. I don’t think there has ever been a permanent ban here.
Id recommend looking up your topic in a big name journal just to play it safe. Better science, less misinformation.
I’d like to build/find a list of the best journals to add to the sidebar.

In my experience shit rolls downhill, so start at the top.
Join the discussion at [email protected] . It was a neutral space but now that we’re in fascist America neutrality is no longer acceptable.
The working class need a voice and the DNC is so completely clueless, so that communication needs to happen like an avalanche for anything to change.
good idea. I’ll add these to an unacceptable source list in the sidebar. Most of the reports have come from posts like that so I think a majority of people would agree with limiting posts from them.
I completely agree.
I liked askhistorians, as I felt like the moderation added to the quality a lot, but /r/science never seemed to achieve that level of quality. Though when they did start with the heavy moderation/clear rules with tags (I think flair was a later addition) it was a marked improvement off what it was before.
I’m open to suggestions, and I’ll just leave the draft rules up for awhile to get feedback.

5·1 year agoYou’re likely eligible for your states Medicare subsidies. Democrats fixed the family glitch in 2022, so you’ll likely save thousands switching off your employer plan, even if you’re making low six figures.
Of course those subsidies expire in 2025, and there is a snowballs chance in hell of those getting renewed now.
Democrats did a lot of things to improve the lives of working class, at least as much as they could get pass the Republican house.
Their problem is messaging. They are terrible at communicating what they’re doing, and how it’s going to help. I mean part of that problem is the media (ie fox news) is allowed to lie and Dems try to tell the truth. The playing field is not really level.

14·1 year agoHouse and Senate matter far more than the presidency, without them the president has very little influence on policy with exception of veto power.
With 2/3 control, the president wouldn’t even have veto power and would be entirely powerless.

13·1 year agobut vaccines are not foolproof
Yes they are. Only pointing out so there is not unnecessary fear spread about rabies. It is 100% preventable before or after exposure.
Does the rabies vaccine work? The rabies vaccine works remarkably well. Studies indicate that if the vaccine is given immediately and appropriately to someone who was bitten by a rabid animal, it is 100 percent effective.
https://www.chop.edu/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-details/rabies-vaccine

Yeah that would be the hard part. I don’t know how to do that either. Reddit used to have auto-mod tools but nothing like that exists here to easily automate it.
I may just archive the flag idea until a newer version of Lemmy software adds those capabilities.
