  • I played a few hours during the first closed beta. Something of a mix between Battlefield and Hell Let Loose IMO. More down-time (walking long distances, defending positions, lying on your back waiting for revive) than BF. More action than HLL and no enforced support roles. Though there are no in-game classes, some players still end up taking on roles such as continuously driving/flying players from the spawn to the combat area, or just hanging out in bases and upgrading them. Not sure what I think of the persistent economy… In theory it could act as a soft balance for powerful vehicles, but it also allows a player to grind money one match, and then use it all in a different match.

  • I had a similar experience, though I read about it here a few days before Youtube started pushing videos about how Omarchy supposedly is the reason that everybody must switch to Linux now.

What I have gathered, without being more than moderately interested:

    • Some guy made a compositor / tiling window manager named Hyprland. According to its wikipedia article, its main selling points appear to be dynamic tiling, keyboard centric usage, and some fancy blur algorithm.
    • Hyprland appears to have had some kind of freemium monetization model, where you had to pay extra for the full version. I.e. unlike the vast majority of Linux and its ecosystem, not FOSS. Perfectly legal of course, but could still be considered a dick move to not give as much back to a community where most other people are giving away their work for free.
    • The guy who makes Hyprland reinforces his image as a douchebag by posting racist far right rants on his blog and other places.
    • Omarchy is (was?) a script which installs Hyprland on Arch.
    • Omarchy/Hyprland is riddled with ridiculously bad security issues, allegedly as a result of relying heavily on vibe coding.
    • Some rich guy decides to give a lot of money to Omarchy/Hyprland, so the developer can let people use Hyprland for free, and rebrand Omarchy as a Linux distribution.

  • There are no in-game classes, you just buy whatever weapons, equipment and vehicles you want. The only soft limit is the cost of items, and I assume that’s something they’re going to continue adjusting. The different classes only exists out of game, where you have different XP tracks. I.e. to unlock more sniper weapons and equipment you have to do sniper-y stuff while playing first.

At least the early assault rifles which I had access to in the beta were pretty crap at range, so IMO it has less of the “everybody is a sniper” feeling of HLL :D I think any semi-realistic game with a huge map tends to naturally favour sniping to some degree.

  • That has been my experience too, having run Linux on different diy PCs from gtx970 to rtx3090. Everything has just worked.

So an acquaintance’s son asked for upgrade advice and I told him to get a rtx5060 because that would give him the most performance on his limited budget, without also requiring a PSU upgrade… And it turned out to be a nightmare to get it up and running. I spent hours to get it to boot and then to actually use the GPU, and the computer still freezes on shutdown so he has to hold the power button to turn it off.

It could be the combination of rtx50xx, gigabyte motherboard and Bazzite, i.e. not necessarily only Nvidia’s fault but the computer worked fine while he had a gtx1080

  • It could be… But if we’re speculating, it could also be the opposite. For example if someone has software they really need Linux for, thanks to WSL they don’t need to switch or dual boot. Additionally, if someone uses WSL and it gives them a lot of trouble, then it might also give them the idea that this is because Linux is bad.

WSL is to Window users kind of what Wine/Proton is for Linux users. It’s not exactly the same because people have more reasons to want to ditch Windows, but I doubt Wine/Proton is a stepping stone to full Windows for Linux users :)

  • They might be thinking of .deb vs .rpm

I haven’t touched it in a few years but I had to switch distro because (X)Ubuntu filled my system SSD with multiple copied of every single Snap it had installed. Iirc it saved the last 3 versions and there was no way of turning it off

IMO Ubuntu is a good fit for people who don’t want to learn anything about computers and have no opinions about how their OS should work, so they want someone else to make all decisions for them. Nothing inherently wrong with that, it’s just not for me. I switched to Fedora because I want to be in control of my computer

  • If you want a DE which looks similar to KDE, try Xfce with Arc theme and some nice icon pack.

I use KDE (and it’s snappy on my hardware) but I like it because it has a lot of features and advanced options which it tries to make easily accessible to the user. IMO this is pretty much the opposite of “modern”, which is usually very minimalist, and UX designers like to remove or hide as much as possible. I’ve tried Gnome several times but personally I can’t stand it just because it’s a modern UI :) You try as many as you can and pick the one that suits you best of course, just thought it was funny that the same word can have different meanings to people.

I’ve bought various cards from GTX 970 up to my current RTX 3090 and never had any real issues. So I recommended an RTX 5060 to my wife’s friend’s kid (we’ve helped him build and upgrade a Linux computer over the last years) because it seemed like the best value he could get for his modest savings. After installing the card for him I spent hours trying to get it working… In the end I got it to boot and use the GPU in games, but the computer still hangs indefinitely if he tries to shut it down, so every time he has to hold the power button to turn it off. Since then I’ve got some suggestions for things to try from the Bazzite discord, so I hope it’ll be possible to fix.
