Its a hardware thing but its also more complicated. Many manufacturers don’t some of these features because add android does not require it. Even Google’s latest pixel 11 may not have all the security requirements set by grapheneOS. I’d like to see them push for these requires in upstream AOSP. They already have a track record of contributions to upstream AOSP.

For myself I don’t consider NFC payments or the few apps that require device integrity auth. Not everyone falls into this category but a good percentage are. We need more modern open hardware. To the larger software point there is a lot of good Foss software out there even for phones. What we need is a open software center like a flathub that makes them easy to find and deploy.

I thought we would see more custom Roms honestly. CalyxOS shows upcoming but still seems to be unavailable. What really concerns me about fairphone is their delay in Software updates. The FP6 releases June of last year, the same month as Android 16. It took them until March of '26 to release Android 16 for the FP6. That is quite a large gap. Software support is as important as hardware support and unfortunately not a single manufacturer seems to nail them both.
Yeah this is because for some god unknown reason they decided to drop USB3 support despite the CPU supporting it. It’s such an anti consumer move.

More timely software updates. The fairphone 6 launched the same month as Android 16 but the Fairphone 6 took until March of 2026 to recieve an update to Android 16. Still waiting on Android 17 which was released last month. Waiting to see how they do on this next major update but 6 month lag time is not impressive.
Unfortunately it is one of the only phones that has a user replaceable battery and is easily repairable. I WANT to like this phone. Just fix the software and don’t cheap out on wired things like connectivity standardards that literally would have added pennies to the cost.

De-googled my phones when they continued pushing this. Google TV is a little harder but turning off voice input and loading a 3rd party launcher fixes most issues for now.

So there are certainly some valid use cases. They could be useful for surgeries, engineering design work, surveying, etc. None of these have you wearing them all the time or in social areas through. It’s a niche product they need to focus on those markets and stop trying to force mass adoption. It’s the same as AI.

It’s worse then that because studios aren’t names they are the people that make the games. All these studios are effectively dead The only good that may come of this are the devs that start their own indio studio and make the games they want. Not an easy path mind you.
