Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is there a self-hosted Family Link server?English
4·23 days agoAren’t they going to shutdown their DNS and use someone’s else’s?
It’s almost like brewing coffee before having your first coffee.
To pour oil on the fire (since you said you already decided on an OS), a lot of people recommend Linux Mint as a goto OS when moving from Windows, supposed to be the most similar experience.
That’s not surprising given their rules, especially rule 3.

1·29 days agoBut you could never write code like this
Create webserver that responds with HTTP 418 I'm a teapotand have it compile it to anything. You still had to think of the logic and design.

2·29 days agoFast fashion would be the other end of an extreme. Another way is for stores to have one of each size, you try the one you want and place an order. The store delivers in batches and enough orders are placed.

14·29 days ago100% agreed. My teacher said that he taught us tools, how they worked and how to use them, in order for us to apply them in new ways. Even with a calculator you have to understand the underlaying logic to actually do something. Don’t know basic mathematics? Good luck using a calculator.

2·1 month agoI’d say it holds up even more. All sick people go to hospitals and that’s where we employs doctors. EFF’s target audience[1] are using Twitch so they go there.
1: I assume, since why would they use Twitch otherwise?

7·1 month agoThis is why I did for my homelab. I had an Dell OptiPlex 3020 (or something in the 3000 series), took everything except the motherboard and PSU (becuase those were Dells own form factor) and bought those new. A the sole user of what is on my server a consumer i5 is enough, even streaming with Jellyfin works without problems.

11·1 month agoIn your opinion, is the qualifications for a Nazi universally understood and agreed upon? As in, everyone in our society has the same opinion regarding what makes a person a Nazi?

91·1 month agoSure, but as soon as just one person thinks someone else is a Nazi, should we kill them?
Again, I am not saying that it is cool to be a Nazi, I am saying that we can’t just go around persecuting people willy nilly. That is why we have a justice system and a court. Other wise we might just as well do away with them and do as they did to witches in the middle ages.
I deem thee to be a witch, now thou shall burn at the stake.

81·1 month agoWe want to fight Nazis, on that we agree. Then who are these people? We have a court system, an agreed upon authority to make such decisions.
Vigilante1 thinks Mister X is a Nazi, Vigilante2 does not think so. Who is right? Who decides here? I say a court does and this is why I think we can’t just go around and murder people.

2·1 month agoI’ve had success on android with Syncthing. I had it installed on every device I needed the DB on and then a server that was always online to make sure each device had the latest version.
I have an iPhone now and Möbius Sync does not work as well (I think iOS limits background activity). My solution was to access access my DB via ssh (Strongbox has an option for this, Strongbox is KeepassXC but for Apple).

If my fridge could tell me that my milk is about to expire or if I could query it for what is in it, I would want that. But I cannot really come up with anything that current “smart” appliances have that a fridge could use.
